Emerald Lake sits in Tyndall Gorge, beneath the sheer face of Hallett Peak and the rugged crags of Flattop Mountain, a glacial cirque formed by the Tyndall glacier, a remnant of which is far above between the two peaks. It is reached from the Bear Lake trailhead and is a distance of only 1.8 miles, but certainly a moderate effort on snowshoes in deep snow (as was our Virtual Hike).
The Lake is at an altitude of 10,080' and only 6 acres in size. It is barren of fish. While it appears that you can't go any farther due to lack of trail (this is true in winter), there are boulders that you can scramble over to reach a small Lake called Pool of Jade, another 1.5 miles up Tyndall Gorge.#
